HGH therapy is a treatment to increase the levels of human growth hormone, a substance the body produces naturally.

The most common treatment for growth hormone deficiency in both children and adults is growth hormone therapy — injections of growth hormone into the body.

Growth hormone — known as somatropin — can be injected by the patient or a family member. This hormone, which is normally produced in the pituitary gland, stimulates growth and cell reproduction in the body.

  • Once your doctor prescribes your growth hormone therapyyou’ll typically need daily doses of growth hormone. However, depending on the severity of your condition, you may need growth hormone injections more often.
  • Usually, you’ll need to see a doctor every 4 to 8 weeks throughout your treatment so that your doctor can monitor your condition. He or she will test your progress and perform blood tests to help determine whether more growth hormone is needed.

A doctor will also monitor your cholesterol levels, blood glucose levels, and bone density periodically while you’re on growth hormone injections to make sure they’re at healthy levels. Taking growth hormone can impact how the body responds to insulin, which controls blood glucose levels. Untreated growth hormone deficiency can lead to high cholesterol and osteoporosis.

See the table to learn about monitoring in detail:

AntropometricsWeight and body mass index (BMI) - every 3-6 months;
Waist circumference and skinfold thickness if possible - every 6-12 months.
Endocrine MonitoringInsulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1):
annually and as indicated for dose titration;
Thyroid function: within 3-6 months and at least annually.
Metabolic MonitoringAnnually: Hemoglobin A1c; Fasting glucose and insulin; OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test) if high risk.
Obesity Related MonitoringAnnually: Blood pressure; Fasting
lipids; consider AST (aspartate aminotransferase) and ALT (alanine transaminase).
Side EffectsAssess for lower extremity edema at every follow-up visit;
Clinically screen for signs/symptoms of sleep apnea.
Benefits of TherapyBody composition assessment every 2 years;
Cognitive status evaluation: consider on an individual basis;
Motor function evaluation: consider on an individual basis.

Adult Growth Hormone Deficiency (AGHD)

This problem can be treated with recombinant human growth hormone (HGH/rHGH). This is a medically supervised treatment that can be beneficial on a number of different levels.

Low levels of HGH may have been caused by menopause or andropause. We are able to treat low hormone symptoms which include loss of muscle, lower sex drive, weight gain, night sweats, fatigue, mood swings, and sleep issues.

AGHD can be treated using a medically supervised HGH treatment program using recombinant human growth hormone (HGH/rHGH) prescribed by our doctors that are experienced in treating adults who exhibit symptoms and problems associated with AGHD as well as other hormone-related health issues.

What is HGH Therapy?

HGH therapy is a treatment to increase the levels of human growth hormone, a substance the body produces naturally. Treatment involves the injections of recombinant bio-synthetic growth hormone, a substance that is also known as somatropin.

Growth hormone is important, but its production declines naturally as we age. Having good levels of HGH can increase energy, help weight loss, build muscle, increase sexual drive, increase strength, and boost the immune system. Men and women wishing to have HGH therapy usually fall into one of three groups and these are:

  1. Those who have adult growth hormone deficiencies (AGHD), who are over the age of 35 and who would like to slow down the aging process, improve sexual performance, and increase their quality of life.
  2. Top athletes who wish to improve their energy, speed, stamina and to generally enhance their performance.
  3. Adults who are active or athletic, but who have little or no HGH in their blood and who may have a poor immune system.

All of the above will only benefit from HGH therapy if they have low levels of somatropin (growth hormone) in their blood. Approximately 90-95% of adults with growth hormone deficiency will benefit from HGH therapy.

The Three Main Ways of Increasing HGH

  1. Using a substance that is able to increase the natural secretion of HGH by the pituitary gland.
  2. Using human growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) that is injectable.
  3. Using human growth hormone (rHGH) that can be injected.

People over the age of 45 will usually find the last way of increasing HGH is the most effective.

Is growth hormone therapy safe?

Although growth hormone injections are relatively safe and effective, there are a few side effects. Fortunately, serious side effects are rare. Swelling, numbness, joint, and muscle aches and pains are the most common side effects.

You may experience these side effects if you’re getting more growth hormone than you need. If you have these symptoms, talk to a doctor immediately to reduce your dosage. He or she will adjust the amount of growth hormone you’re taking. Once a doctor adjusts your dose, the symptoms should go away on their own.

There are some people who shouldn’t take growth hormone injections, such as people who have tumors or cancer. People who are seriously ill, have multiple injuries from a trauma, or severe breathing problems should also not take growth hormone injections.

HGH Therapy Can:

  • Help reduce excess body fat, especially around the abdominal area, and many people will find this is often the most profound effect of using replacement therapy.
  • It can also help to increase muscle mass and strength provided it’s combined with moderate exercise.
  • It can help reduce some of the effects of skin aging such as wrinkling.
  • Help to rejuvenate certain internal organs that may have atrophied during aging.
  • Increase bone density.
  • Help to strengthen the immune system.
  • Help to stimulate the production of bone marrow cells.
  • It may help to reverse cognitive decline, helping to reduce the possibility of needing to spend your twilight years in a nursing home.

HGH Therapy Cannot:

  • HGH therapy cannot reverse the effects of cardiovascular disease, though it may help to reduce its progression through improving cholesterol levels.
  • It’s not able to eliminate the effects of oxidation damage.
  • It cannot eliminate the effects of low levels of other hormones. In fact, if you are deficient in certain hormones then this could decrease the beneficial effects of HGH therapy.
  • It cannot completely eliminate the damage caused due to exposure to excessive ultraviolet light.
  • It will not increase your maximum lifespan, although those with HGH or IGF-1 genetic defects may find it extends the life expectancy.

Getting Started

  1. The first step is to have a full medical consultation and examination with our doctor who specializes in hormone replacement therapy. You will also require to have a series of blood tests and to complete medical history forms.
  2. Your blood work and medical history will be analyzed by our doctor to see whether or not you have a deficiency in HGH, testosterone, or other hormones. If our doctor feels you would benefit from a therapy program, one of two things will happen: (i) For testosterone and other hormones, our doctor would create a bespoke hormone replacement program for you, which is medically supervised, or (ii) For human growth hormone therapy, our doctor will refer you to an endocrinologist who would oversee your HGH replacement program.
  3. You’ll be shown how to inject yourself with the correct dosage of testosterone hormone, and your progress will be fully monitored with regular examinations and follow-up blood tests. If necessary your HGH prescription will be adjusted during this time.
